Everywhere I go people are worried about the coronavirus. Restaurants are nearly empty, travel is cheap, events and vacations cancelled. People are worried and stressed. What precautions can you take to support you and your family?

Herbals, nutrients and botanicals to support the immune system:

Garlic contains a protein called lectin that has been shown to inhibit most common viruses. Garlic is used regularly in functional and integrative medicine. Fresh, crushed garlic has some anti-infective effects in the mouth and throat, but also exhibits strong activity in the lungs. Onions and leeks also have this anti-viral protein. Consume fresh garlic – crush garlic and wait up to 60 seconds before consuming.

Elderberry is a medicinal plant with a long tradition of use as an effective antiviral. Drink it in tea or consume in a supplement (ImmunoBerry below).

Cat’s Claw is a medicinal plant mostly found in the amazon and tropical areas in central and south america.Cat’s Claw has been shown to support your immune system, possibly helping fight infections more effectively. A study of 27 men found that consuming 700 mg of cat’s claw extract for 2 months increased their number of white blood cells, which are involved in combating infections.

Diet: Eat a diet that emphasizes nutrients essential to optimal immune system function:

• Zinc – seafood, pumpkin seed, sea vegetables, and beans, lentils and legumes
• Vitamin D – salmon, fatty fish, egg yolks, cheese (if tolerable), mushrooms
• Vitamin C – oranges, papayas, strawberries, kiwi, organic leafy green vegetables (spinach, bok choy, kale), broccoli, bell peppers
• Vitamin A – liver, cod liver oil, mackerel, salmon; beta-carotene: sweet potato, winter squash, kale, collards, carrots
• Drink plenty of water to optimize hydration. (consume 1/2 your body weight in ounces of water as a general rule).
• Reduce and ideally eliminate dietary sugar & alcohol intake.
• Optimize omega-3 fatty acid composition of diet to support your anti-inflammatory status.
• Adequate protein intake (RDA: 0.8 grams per kilogram (g/kg) of body weight a day). Higher protein intake may be warranted, and can be achieved by supplementing with high-quality protein powders. Whey protein supplementation has been shown to increase glutathione levels, a powerful antioxidant, further supporting immune and antioxidant protection.

Other things to keep your family safe:

• Drink plenty of water to optimize hydration. (consume 1/2 your body weight in ounces water as a general rule. Weight 100 lbs drink 50 ounces of water a day).
• Reduce dietary sugar & alcohol intake.
• Optimize omega-3 fatty acid composition of diet to support patient anti-inflammatory status.
• Adequate protein intake (RDA: 0.8 grams per kilogram (g/kg) of body weight a day). Higher protein intake may be warranted, and can be achieved by supplementing with high-quality protein powders. • Get your sleep to ensure adequate quantity and quality of restorative rest to keep up your resiliency.
• Increase your immunity with meditation, breath work, and restorative yoga.
• Balanced physical activity routine. Do not over-exercise during times of immune challenge.
